Tropopause Change MET
The atmosphere is heated, not by the sun, but by conduction from the warm earth and absorption of terrestrial (not solar) radiation by greenhouse gases. It is easy to make the mistake that the sun is warming the air, but the gases that make up the troposphere are "transparent" at the frequencies of radiation the sun produces and so this energy passes directly through them, warming the earth.
