Local Winds MET

You are required to have an awareness of some of the winds that have been named locally for the effects they bring. Very often, knowing which continent the wind is on is sufficient to get you to the right answer.

The list is as follows:

Bora - A cold katabatic wind flowing into the Adriatic

Mistral - A northerly valley wind in southern France

Scirocco - A southerly wind from N Africa sometimes bringing dust into the Mediterranean

Chinook - A Fohn wind in North America

Pamperos - An advance of cold air in South America

Harmattan - NE wind affecting NW Africa reducing visibility due to dust
