TACAN Purpose RNAV

The military TACANTACAN —Tactical Air to Navigation (Navaid) (Tactical Aid to Navigation) is a system that provides military aircraft with both range and bearing. The system that provides the bearing part is a unique system that civilian aircraft cannot use as they do not have the required equipment, but the system for distance is identical to a DMEDME —Distance Measuring Equipment, and so can be tuned on a civilian VORVOR —VHF Omnidirectional Range/DMEDME —Distance Measuring Equipment receiver. Hence, a TACANTACAN —Tactical Air to Navigation (Navaid) can provide you with DMEDME —Distance Measuring Equipment distance, and DMEDME —Distance Measuring Equipment distance only.
